The grey colour of the chair corresponds to the colour of the carpet. The lightweight leg pipes distribute weight and are less likely to damage the carpet with their rounded shape. With its subtle texture and lack of excessive gloss, the hairline finish blends well with the carpet.

絨毯の色と呼応するグレー。見た目にも軽やかな丸みのある脚部のパイプは、座る人の体重を分散し、絨毯を傷つけにくい。また、パイプは過剰な光沢がない質感のヘアライン仕上げで部屋のインテリアに馴染む。

‘It feels like I’m staying at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) when I come here. Sometimes, I stay with my children, and other times I come alone. I don’t go out much because it’s so comfortable.’

Masahiro Sambe, who is active in a wide range of fields as a photographer, including magazines, advertisements, and art projects, came across this house when he turned 40.

‘My thoughts and moods change when I change places. Here, I can work on the photo selection for an exhibition, or write manuscripts for my online article series. I think this space helps me when I want to do work that requires a different mindset from photography.’

「ここに来ると、旅館に来たような気持ちになります。子どもと泊まったり、ひとりで来たり。心地がいいので外にはあまり出ないですね」

雑誌や広告、アートプロジェクトなど、写真家として幅広い領域で活躍する三部正博さんは、40歳を迎えた区切りの年にこの部屋と出会った。

「ここでは仕事もしていますが、場所を変えると、思考や気分が切り替わりますよね。展示のために写真を選んだり、ウェブでの連載のために原稿を書いたり。撮影とは違う頭を使う仕事をしたいときに、この空間に助けられていると思います」

This house has a floor area of about 50m², with one Western-style room and one Japanese-style room, plus a bath with natural hot spring water. In the living room where wind blows through, there is a beautiful carpet from Yamagata Dantsu, a historic manufacturer established in 1935.

‘When we renovated this place, we had the dining table and sofas designed low because we thought people would be sitting directly on the tatami mats and carpets more often. Nychair X blends in well with this furniture and can be put away when we want to keep the room tidy. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become somewhat uncomfortable with solid or heavy furniture. I think this room reflects the comfort I am looking for now.’

床面積は50平米ほどで、洋室と和室がひとつずつ。いつでも天然温泉が出るお風呂。風が吹き抜けるリビングには、1935年より続くメーカー、山形緞通の絨毯を敷いた。

「畳や絨毯に直接座ることも増えると思って、リノベーションをするとき、ダイニングテーブルやソファは低めに設計してもらいました。ニーチェアエックスはこれらの家具とも馴染むし、部屋をすっきりさせたいときには仕舞っておける。年齢を重ねるにつれて、家具やインテリアを選ぶ基準が変わってきた気がします。この部屋には、自分が今求めている心地よさが反映されていると思います」

The designer of this resort condominium, Junzo Yoshimura, is a master of residential design who is often described as an ‘American-trained modernist with a downtown mentality’. Junzo Yoshimura apprenticed under the American architect Antonin Raymond, gaining experience for about 10 years, during which he learned Western architecture and lifestyle. As a student, he frequently visited Kyoto and Nara, to measure the actual dimensions of tea ceremony and drawing rooms.

‘The design is simple yet elegant. It is rational yet warm. It is not only Japanese, but also has a connection with the West. I think there are similarities between Junzo Yoshimura’s architecture and Nychair X.’

Nychair X Ottoman serves as a stable stool and a luggage rack by the entrance, providing support when leaving or returning home. Additionally, it can be utilised as a side table when sitting on the floor to work. When folded, it stands on its own, making it easy to store against a wall or in the closet.

安定感のあるスツールとして、また、玄関先ではバゲージラックとして出がけや帰宅時のひとときをサポートするオットマン。食事や作業時には、サイドテーブルとしても重宝する。折り畳み時にも自立するため、壁際や押し入れの隙間にも収納しやすい。

Blending in with Japanese and Western spaces

和洋の空間に馴染む、思索のための椅子

Nychair X, with the lowest seat height in the series, offers stability. This chair has a high back and supports the head during relaxed reading, movie watching, or even idle contemplation. Dark brown armrests were chosen to match the colour of the fittings in Masahiro Sambe’s room. The chair seamlessly integrates into the space by aligning Nychair’s colours with the floor and various wooden fittings that create the tone for the whole room, even when the layout is changed for different moods or guests.

シリーズのなかで最も低い座面高で、安定感のあるニーチェアエックス。ハイバック仕様であるために頭をも支え、リラックスした姿勢での読書、映画やドラマ鑑賞をはじめ、ぼーっと過ごす思索の時間にも体を預けられる。肘かけは室内の建具の色に合わせてダークブラウンを選んだ。このように、部屋全体の基調をつくり出している床や建具の木材とニーチェアエックスの色をリンクさせると、来客時のレイアウト変更などで椅子の位置を変えたとしても、常に空間に溶け込んでくれる。
