Hirohisa Kato has been running ‘books+kotobanoie’, a second-hand bookstore that opens twice a month at his home for over 10 years. On open days, Hirohisa arranges flowers at the entrance, burns incense, and his wife Ayako makes coffee for the visitors.

加藤 博久さんはかれこれ10年以上、月に２回のペースで自宅を開け放って古書店「books+kotobanoie(コトバノイエ)」を営んできた。オープンデイには、玄関に花を活け、お香を焚き、妻の綾子さんがコーヒーを淹れて訪れた人をもてなす。

Hirohisa is a used car dealer by profession. This house was not built to be a bookstore, nor was it meant to be a final dwelling place. It was a playful project conceived through an acquaintance, architect Tatsuya Yabe, where they exchanged emails and created an imaginary residence.

とはいえ、加藤さんの本業は中古車のカーディーラー。この家も本屋にしようと建てたのではない。終の住処、なんていうものでもない。建築家の矢部 達也さんとたまたま知り合って、言葉を交わして架空の住宅をつくる、という遊びのプロジェクトが発端だった。

‘As we continued exchanging emails, the desire to bring it to life emerged. I wanted Tatsuya to consider it a serious project. Once it was completed and we had a space for books, I realised I could have even more books. Then it occurred to me, why don’t I open a bookstore? I keep the core books I have a strong personal attachment to and cannot let go of in the bedroom. But aside from that small selection, everything else is for sale. Even when the books are sold, they don’t disappear; they just move from my bookshelf to someone else’s who also appreciates them. That’s how I changed my mindset.’

「やりとりを続けていたら、形にしたいという欲が出てきてしまった。矢部さんを本気にさせたいと。そうして完成して、本を置くスペースができると、本がもっと増えましたね。それで、ふと本屋でもやってみようと思い立った。手放すことができない本は寝室にあるけれど、それ以外はすべて買えます。売れても、本がなくなるわけではない。僕の本棚から、次の読み手の本棚に移動するだけ。そう考えるようにマインドセットを変えたんです」

Nychair X has been used regularly in the house since its completion in 2005. Over the past 20 years, his children have grown up and left home. More than 10 years have passed since the bookstore started. Why has Nychair X remained here all this time?

家が2005年に完成してから約20年。やがて子どもは巣立ち、ふいに本屋がはじまった。この家ができたことで、仕事や、身の振り方などあらゆることが有機的に変わった。そんななか、ニーチェアエックスは置き場所を固定されることなく、家族をはじめ、言葉を求めてここを訪れる人々を受けとめてきた。この椅子が残り続けてきたのはなぜだろう。

‘The main reason is its storability and flexibility. You can fold it up quickly and unfold it wherever you like. It’s compact, lightweight, and without anything unnecessary. It’s the perfect chair for relaxing and reading a book. It also has a beautiful presence. Like with this house, I find the history of people and things fascinating. The story behind how Nychair X was created is quite interesting. It’s not just about good materials; to me, the story behind it gives an object its value.’

「いちばんの理由は、自由度の高さ。折り畳めて収納しやすく持ち運びやすい。好きなところでぱっと広げられる。本を読むのにはもってこいですよ。佇まいも美しいでしょう。僕は、なにかにつけて“来歴”を面白がるところがある。いい素材であるとか、そういうことに加えて、それが、どんなストーリーを辿ってきたのかが大事なんです。ニーチェアが出来上がるまでの新居さんの物語って、なかなか面白いでしょ。僕にとってはそういうことがものの価値につながっていくんだと思います」
